Hampshire Police are considering whether any criminal offences were committed when Southampton fans taunted Cardiff over the death of Emiliano Sala, Sky Sports News understands.

Police are liaising with the club after three Saints fans were ejected during Cardiff’s visit to St Mary’s on Saturday after making aeroplane gestures towards Bluebirds supporters.

Footage on social media showed the fans holding out their arms and rocking from side-to-side, apparently mimicking a plane.

A statement from Southampton said: “Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary’s.

“The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified.”

Cardiff were playing their first match since Sala’s body had been recovered from the wreckage of a plane in the English Channel.

The striker had disappeared on January 21 when flying from Nantes to Cardiff, just days after leaving the French club to join the Welsh side in a club-record deal.

A minute’s silence was held before the match at St Mary’s, and players from both sides wore black armbands.

Cardiff won the crucial Premier League relegation clash 2-1 thanks to a last-minute winner from Kenneth Zohore, leaving them two places and one point above the drop zone.
