Frank Ocean has great skin.
It might not be your first thought about the reclusive singer/songwriter but it’s undeniable nonetheless.
So, how does Ocean keep his skin looking so fresh?
Well, in a rare interview with published in GQ, Ocean divulged his grooming secrets — and it aligns exactly with what experts have to say.
In the interview, the 31-year-old bashed Pharell Williams — who is famed for his never-aging appearance— for not revealing his skincare tips.
“It’s been all these years, and Pharrell still hasn’t given us the keys yet,” Ocean said.
“He just says ‘exfoliate,’ but it’s not just ‘exfoliate’: We need more keys.”
Luckily, Ocean was not so tight-lipped about his own skincare routine, and it’s all about one special type of moisturizer: night cream.
“My mom told me years ago that you gotta get somebody to stitch the silk inside the lining of the cap so it doesn’t irritate your skin, ’cause your skin is sensitive,” Ocean said.
“I didn’t listen to my mom, but I really do believe in a night cream.”
“I feel like men just go to sleep. They may wash their face or they don’t even bother — they go to sleep with the day face on. You really need to do a gentle wash and put a night moisturizer on. You can’t have the retinol in your creams in the day because it makes you more sun-sensitive, so you wanna throw that on at night.
“I need the night cream because when I wake up I feel very beautiful, moisturized and ready to have people making eye contact with me, ready to look above my eyebrow, below the eyebrow.
“[laughs] That’s the life hack right there.”
Ocean’s advice is especially relevant in winter, which is a terrible time for your skin. Not only does your skin have snow, rain and sleet to contend with, but also centrally-heated buildings, which drain the moisture from the air and leave your skin feeling dry and flakey.
Night masks are one of the best ways to restore your skin’s moisture, Jonas Öhman, grooming expert and writer for Sweden’s Café magazine, told INSIDER recently.
“A couple of times a week use a night mask/sleeping mask, which is like a heavy-duty cream to describe it in simple terms,” Öhman said. “You just go to sleep with it on and it works wonders.”
Most guys tend to avoid heavy creams like night masks because they feel sticky or greasy on their skin — but this is actually a good thing in winter.
“People continue using their gels and light lotions, which results in them becoming dry, or flakey, or red,” Öhman said.
“It’s one of the biggest misconceptions: that you can use the same product all year round.
“Night masks come in all different shapes and varieties but most of them would be moisturising and hydrating.”
Will we be getting more skincare wisdom from Ocean anytime soon? Well, since his Instagram account is back in the public domain, it might finally be time he got into being a men’s grooming influencer.
